2nd LD Writethru: Sudanese government agrees to ceasefire with rebels

KHARTOUM, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Sudanese government has agreed to a ceasefire in principle and a new round of peace talks with rebel factions in Sudan's troubled Darfur region, the country's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

In a statement issued after a meeting between Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and new UN special envoy Jan Eliasson, the ministry said that Khartoum has agreed to a ceasefire and is willing to conduct a new round of peace talks with the rebels "in any place and at any time."

But the statement fell short of setting a date for the ceasefire to take effect. There was no comment from the rebels ...
