China needs outstanding film producers, official says

BEIJING, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese film industry needs to resurrect its producer system and find a new generation of producers who are politically, aesthetically and economically competent, a senior film administrator said here on Friday.

In the 1920s, China saw the emergence of a batch of outstanding producers -- such as Zhang Shichuan, Zhang Shankuan, Xiang Yunhu, Gu Eryi, and Gu Yelu -- who, like their Hollywood counterparts of the period, had both artistic and financial control of the filmmaking process.
