UN refugee chief starts Mideast tour, focusing on Iraq

GENEVA, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres left Geneva on Friday for a mission to the Middle East, aiming to assess programs for hundreds of thousands of displaced Iraqis in the region.

During the tour to Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan and Syria, Guterres will discuss with local officials how to strengthen cooperation between the UN Refugee Agency and regional partners, the agency's spokesman Ron Redmond told reporters.

Guterres will also discuss with regional officials the UN Refugee Agency's plan for an international conference on Iraqi displacement to be held in mid-April in Geneva.
