UN chief hails elections in Timor-Leste

UNITED NATIONS, April 9 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki- moon on Monday hailed the holding of the first presidential elections in Timor-Leste.

"The secretary-general congratulates the many Timorese who showed their commitment to democracy and peace by participating in today's vote -- the country's first presidential elections since independence in 2002," said a statement issued by the UN chief's spokesperson.
