Does having a glass of warm milk before bed really help you get to
sleep?
THE CLAIM: You've probably heard this one at some point, perhaps
from your mother or grandmother: If you're having a hard time getting
to sleep, try a glass of warm milk; it'll help.
THE EVIDENCE: Not so good. In fact, Dr. Donald Greenblatt says
that, of all the things he'll try if he's having a hard time getting
to sleep, one homegrown remedy he doesn't follow is drinking warm
milk before bed. Milk contains tryptophan -- which does encourage
sleep, says Greenblatt, director of the Strong Sleep Disorders Center
and Sleep Services at the University of Rochester Medical Center. But
