LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- And now, for his next odds-defying trick,
Michael Matz will pull a Triple Crown out of his horse's rose-
petaled hooves.
Or will he?
Fate -- Matz's constant running mate since he had a slight delay
waiting for his baggage at the Sioux City airport 17 summers ago --
now comes into play as the trainer and his Kentucky Derby champion,
Barbaro, begin the long mid-Atlantic valley road toward thoroughbred
racing's most prized magic. No horse has won the American
thoroughbred Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978.
One day after his colt powered to a 6 1/2-length victory in the
132nd running of the Kentucky Derby, Matz confirmed that Barbaro
likely will run in the $1 million ...
