Growing up in a small town in rural Illinois, Jessica Forys was
insulated from the onslaught of shiny new things. She learned from
her grandmothers and aunts the value of making old things new.
So when it came time for the 26-year-old art major at the
University of Missouri to prepare a thesis project for a master's
degree in fine arts, Forys returned to the lessons of her youth. She
scavenged thrift stores and estate and garage sales for items with
stories to tell.
Forys spotted a highchair, picture frames, a towel bar and old
quilts. Among her favorite finds were a bright pink silky comforter
and a dilapidated baby crib she found on the side of road in Cape
Girardeau.
