Article: Backer kept firm thriving ; Potato chip chief died on Saturday.

Bill Backer, chairman of Backer's Potato Chips in Fulton, died Saturday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 85.

Backer will be remembered as leading Backer's for more than 50 years as it became the only remaining family-owned potato chip company in Missouri.

"He devoted his life to making this business a success, for sure," said Tom Hayes, sales manager for Backer's. "He just put his nose to the grindstone to move this thing forward."

Backer was born Dec. 3, 1922, in Fulton. His father, Ernest Backer, started the potato chip company in 1931 after a fire destroyed the family's bakery in Fulton, said Dale Backer, Bill Backer's son and vice president of sales for Backer's.
