Santa Anita Derby a stepping stone in the past
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) - Eoin Harty, horse racing in his
bloodlines, left County Kildare as a teenager to chase the American
dream.
If things go right for the trainer and Colonel John in today's
Santa Anita Derby, they'll be heading off to Kentucky in pursuit of
one of sport's most coveted prizes.
Harty could hardly have planned it better when he left Ireland at
17.
"I came to America as the land of opportunity, to try to make my
way in the world," he said. "When I left Ireland (in the 1980s), it
was a very poor economic country with a huge unemployment rate.
