N 16 YEARS of doing this job, I'd never heard of the Regional
Transport Board," freely admits Westcountry MP Gary Streeter. If
anyone knew how the mysterious South West Regional Assembly
organisation worked, it would surely have been him: a one-time
Conservative frontbencher and regular passenger on the Plymouth to
London Paddington train service. But no. And he is not the only one.
Before its chairman, Wiltshire councillor Julian Johnson, told a
transport select committee the region would "very definitely" be
better off if First Great Western was kicked off the railways, the
Regional Transport Board rubbed along quietly.
