Article: Police ID mall shooting victim

SAN LEANDRO -- More questions than answers have emerged from the investigation of a daylight shooting Monday outside a neighborhood strip mall that left a former Fremont man dead.

San Leandro police on Tuesday identified the victim as Ernest Ray Sauceda, a 25-year-old unemployed construction worker who recently moved to San Leandro. His killer remains at large.

Sauceda was shot about 11:30 a.m. at the entrance to the San Leandro Plaza Shopping Center at East 14th Street and Estudillo Avenue.

A botched carjacking appears to be the most probable motive, Lt. Tom Overton said, but he added that authorities haven't ruled out other circumstances.
