Starbucks lawsuit Julie Zuck Elizabethtown

Editor, New Era: I am writing in response to the $105 million lawsuit that Starbucks is currently facing in California because of the dispensing of tips to shift supervisors.

On March 19, Judge Patricia Cowett issued the ruling because former employee Jou Chou felt that it was unfair that members of the management team were receiving a cut of the weekly tips.

As a recently promoted shift supervisor, this case hit close to home because my weekly tips greatly affect my income.

When I started working for Starbucks, I was making pennies over the Pennsylvania minimum wage. However, with my weekly tips, my salary was increased by about $2 an hour. My raise as a shift supervisor was about $1.50.
