Article: San Leandro man gunned down at mall was pot grower

SAN LEANDRO _ Homicide investigators have determined that a San Leandro man shot to death last week outside a neighborhood mall was an illegal-marijuana grower, but it is not clear whether that led to his death, according to authorities.

Ernest Ray Sauceda, 25, was killed in what police initially thought was a botched carjacking at about 11:30 a.m. April 7 outside Washington Plaza, on East 14th Street and Estudillo Avenue.

While investigating, police found 250 marijuana plants, 8 pounds of finished product and $4,000 in cash in Sauceda's home on the 500 block of Dowling Boulevard, Lt. Tom Overton said Tuesday.
