BETHANY -- Esther V. Beckert was very independent. "She was driving until she was 86," recalled a son, Rudolph "Rudy" Beckert Jr. of Bethany. "She didn't get her driver's license until after my father died, which was 1970 and she was 52 or so. She started driving people to doctor appointments and shopping, and was doing so until she was 84. She lived in an apartment attached to my house and a week would go by that I wouldn't see her. She did all her own shopping."
