Prison watchdogs say that overcrowding at Exeter Prison could be
responsible for recent suicides.
Five prisoners have committed suicide at Exeter Prison over the
last four years and the Howard League for Penal Reform said that the
number of cases of prisoners self-harming had also risen.
Campaigners claim the figures, which the Echo obtained through a
Freedom of Information Act request, reflect the overcrowded
conditions at the jail in New North Road.
There were suicides in January and August 2004, January 2005 and
August and September 2007. Across all of the UK's 141 prisons,
there were 92 apparent suicides last year.
