HOPEWELL -- Plans to convert the Mallonee school into luxury
apartments may be on hold due to a suspicious fire Sunday night. The
iconic -- but long-empty -- school was damaged in a blaze battled by
Hopewell, Fort Lee and Prince George firefighters.
Fire Marshal Larry Turner said crews were going to a fire on 14th
Avenue when they spotted smoke. They received the call that the
school was on fire at 5:20 p.m., and arrived three minutes later.
They forcibly entered the boarded-up masonry building, finding the
fire in several classrooms. Some boards were torn off the school and
windows broken open to let smoke out. The fire was marked under
control at 6:40 p.m.
