Former Exeter MP Gwyneth Dunwoody, Parliament's longest-serving
woman MP, has died aged 77.
Mrs Dunwoody won the Exeter seat in 1966, the first time Labour
had taken it, beating the Conservative MP Sir Rolf Dudley- Williams
by 3,586 votes.
But John Hannam - later to become Sir John - won it back for the
Tories from Mrs Dunwoody in 1970.
At the time of the 1970 General Election, she said she did not
want the people to vote for her - but to vote for themselves.
"This city is my total commitment. We have a big job to de here.
We have to make Exeter something we can point to as a success
