Glen Burnie's connection to Maryland's biggest city is undeniable, but the surburb of Baltimore has long had an identity of its own.

In 1908, the community launched the Big Glen Burnie Carnival. In many ways it was a first step toward creating a sense of place beyond farm fields and a stop on the WB&A Railroad.

The story behind the first carnival differ slightly depending on who you ask, but the consensus is that Glen Burnie needed a sidewalk and a road. Community leaders settled on a carnival to raise the money.
