1st LD Writethru: Cyprus starts preparatory talks for
reunification
NICOSIA, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Greek and Turkish Cypriot
negotiators began preparatory negotiations Friday to pave the way
for substantive reunification talks between their leaders in June.
Six working groups and seven technical committees from both
communities were participating in the talks, which began after a
brief ceremony in the UN-protected area in the capital Nicosia.
Elizabeth Spehar, acting special representative of the UN
Secretary General in Cyprus, said the launch of the preparatory
talks showed the commitment of the two communities and their
leaders' constructive attitude toward a settlement.
