Montgomery and Prince George's county officials restricted water
use at all of their 388 public schools yesterday after tests at two
campuses showed elevated levels of lead.
While emphasizing that the measures were precautionary, school
officials said that drinking fountains in hallways and locker rooms
will be flushed for 15 minutes every four hours during the school
day. Warning signs will be posted and classroom spigots taped off to
prevent their use. Tests on all school buildings will begin
immediately.
"We are assuming that every school is at risk until proven
otherwise," said Montgomery School Superintendent Jerry D. Weast.
