Article: A rough enough challenge: Players agree newest feature should make Winged Foot fairer

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Winged Foot Golf Club's West Course has the
longest par-4 in U.S. Open history, a par-3 that's famous in
tournament history, bunkers that are extremely deep and greens that
may be too fast -- even by U.S. Open standards.
All that pales in significance, though, to the newest feature at
this historic A.W. Tillinghast course. It's called tiered rough, and -
- lo and behold -- it's an innovation that everybody seems to like
heading into today's start of the 106th edition of the national
championship.
"The way it's set up now is as fair as I've seen in a long time,"
two-time U.S. Open champion Ernie Els said. "All the players agree
with that."
