Karen Russo had to rely on the kindness of strangers to create
the new "A Streetcar Named Desire," which the Dayton Ballet will
premiere Thursday, April 24. First, she had to convince the
Tennessee Williams Foundation in England to grant her production
rights. "They turned me down the first two times I asked. I kept
after them," said Russo, rehearsal assistant and director of Dayton
Ballet II, Senior Company.
"I told them people besides those who live on the two coasts
should be able to see this story and that organizations without huge
budgets should also have access to it. They finally said yes."
Her euphoria was short-lived. Paying the literary fees consumed
almost her entire production ...
