U.S. WOMEN'S MARATHON TRIALS

BOSTON - Deena Kastor, the 2004 Olympic Marathon bronze medal winner, went to the starting line at yesterday's Olympic team women's marathon trials as a big favorite.

But for 23 miles, her eventual victory in a time of 2:29:35 was in serious doubt.

"I was scared, and I was worried," said the Waltham native, who as a kid when visiting her grandparents in Hull, would run on the sands of Nantasket Beach. "I was panicked a little bit out there. I was worried that I might not get this title, which was my goal," said Kastor, 35, who has now run her way onto her third Olympic team.
