Hats off to Diane James, the Lady Mayoress, who has shown
Plymouth over the past year what the word "stylish" means.
Now Mrs James is topping off her year of civic functions by
auctioning most of her collection of 40 hats for charity.
"I'm only keeping my favourites and the ones that go with
outfits," she said. "Anyway, they're taking up too much space in the
house. They're all in hat boxes."
She admitted she had always had a lot of hats, "even when I was
very young".
"I grew up with hats as a child because I was a Methodist and had
to wear a hat to chapel - and we went three times on a Sunday.
"My father joked that my mother only went to chapel to see what
hat Mrs So-and-So was wearing."
