Years ago, as the story goes, Don Smith, then Roanoke Electric Steel's top executive, shared with board chairman John Hancock some conceptual plans for a new office building.

Hancock glanced at the drawings.

"Don, how many more tons of steel is this going to get through the mill?" asked Hancock, who founded Roanoke Electric Steel in 1955 and died in 1994.

"Those plans went into a drawer," said Joe Crawford, vice president and general manager of Steel Dynamics Inc.'s Roanoke Bar Division -- formerly Roanoke Electric Steel Corp.

A new day has dawned.

SDI plans to build a new, $2.1 million office building on a precious plot of open land at the mill, which operates in the city of Roanoke.
