Internet subscribers have a reasonable expectation of privacy in
the subscriber information they provide to their Internet service
provider in order to access the web, the New Jersey Supreme Court
has ruled.
The owner of a company was notified by a supplier that the
shipping address for the company had been changed to a non-existent
address using the company's password and ID. The owner notified the
police, and a municipal court issued a subpoena to the local
Internet Service Provider (ISP) to find out the subscriber
information of the person using the IP address that made the change.
The ISP turned over the information for a disgruntled employee on
disability leave and she was charged with ...
