Do not attempt to adjust your set. "Speed Racer" is supposed to
look like that.
In the same way that objects in the mirror are closer than they
appear, "Speed Racer" makes a mockery of perception and perspective.
While other digitally enhanced offerings strive for a photo-
realistic imitation of life and end up inanimate, this kid-and-
family-oriented film -- written and directed by Larry and Andy
Wachowski, who created the "Matrix" trilogy -- makes life look like
a vibrant, eye-popping cartoon.
Which is fitting since it is based on the clunky syndicated
Japanese anime series that debuted in 1967.
Given carte blanche to re-engineer the DNA of something fondly
