When she purchased her first batch of chirping French chicks in
1999, Joanne Hurford had only intended to keep them as a hobby.
Now, nine years later, she sells 40 whole organically produced
chickens each month, raised on her farm near Chulmleigh.
"I got a few just to try for fun and sold to my friends," said
Joanne. "The business started to grow from there. I began
supplying more people and little shops and then an organic farmer,
who bought around 40 to 50 per week.
"We started to sell at Cullompton farmers' market, and we used to
do markets in Dorset too, but now we are only doing Crediton. I'm
just a small-time chicken keeper now!"
