The Government has defended its decision to close thousands of
post offices, including hundreds in the Westcountry, in a bid to
streamline the service and cut the network's pounds500,000 daily
losses.
Business and post offices minister Pat McFadden insisted the
closures were necessary to make the post office network more
sustainable and economically viable.
Speaking at the National Federation of Subpostmasters' annual
conference at the Riviera Centre in Torquay, where he received a
standing ovation on his way in and out, Mr McFadden, insisted it was
important to cut 2,500 of the country's 14,000 post offices to make
the service stronger "than all the banks put together and three
times bigger ...
