NADA SURF Koko LONDON ****
The NME recently anointed Brooklyn the new "creative centre of
the musical universe", but there's clearly been magic in the water
there for some time now if local veterans Nada Surf are anything to
go by. This show by the quirky power-pop trio proves that a firm
grasp of pop classicism can be as satisfying as the wild invention
of the acts, such as Animal Collective, in the vanguard of the Big
Apple borough's "new-pop frontier".
Singer and guitarist Matthew Caws, bassist Daniel Lorca and
drummer Ira Elliot don't pack the visual punch of, say, MGMT -
they're just three nerdy blokes on guitar, bass and drums - but
their sweet, catchy songs about Sopwith Camels and ...
