It can't be called a step back because Northwestern won the game,
and that is the point, after all. But it wouldn't be accurate to
label the Wildcats' effort against winless Eastern Michigan a step
forward, either, given the closer-than-it-should've-been outcome.
Is this team improving? The Wildcats sidestepped the issue
entirely while hanging on for a 14-6 victory on Saturday at Ryan
Field over a team that had only five first downs and 47 passing
yards. Where is Northwestern headed? Not even coach Pat Fitzgerald
had a definitive answer.
"Now I know what the White Sox felt like when I was growing up and
they were winning ugly," the Orland Park native said.
