A draw would not have been good enough for David Jeffrey's men
but just as they were about to record a scoreless draw on the back
of an impressive performance when Keegan directed a close range
diving header into the Northern Ireland net when he met Stephen
Rice's curled free-kick.
The Republic, who now top qualifying Group B, have earned a
winner-take-all showdown with Belgium in November, needing only a
point to reach the final.
This game was delayed by 20 minutes due to a dispute over who
would wear white socks after a clash of colours was noted just
