Step back, lady pie bakers, and let a gentleman through. The
$5,000 Best of Show winner in the amateur division of the 2008
American Pie Council/ Crisco National Pie Championship is John
Sunvold from Winter Springs, Fla.
Sunvold, a professor at a community college in Orlando, Fla.,
covered the East Coast from northernmost to southernmost tips with
his U.S. Route 1 Florida Key Lime with Maine Blueberries Pie.
After finding several questionable ingredient amounts and
preparation instructions in his recipe, and trying unsuccessfully to
reach him by phone, I came up with a very close facsimile to his
winning dessert.
Recognizing the pie as a basic Key Lime, topped with fresh
berries in preserves ...
