CONSIDER red (state) anger. For decades there have been efforts
to arouse anger against "liberal elites" who (so it is said)
consider themselves superior to "ordinary Americans." These brie-
eating, Volvo-driving, chardonnay-drinking, overeducated snobs, who
have no idea how to use duct tape or change their oil, have (we are
told) an irritating way of telling everyone else how to run their
lives. In the minds of red-state angry folks, these tastes in food,
beverage and vehicle preference somehow translate into indicators of
patriotism and religion. (Liberals have little of either.) This
provides a basis for considerable ire.
