Patriot Coal to develop Boone reserves

Patriot Coal Corp. announced it has entered into a joint venture with Rhino Energy Limited Liability Co. to develop metallurgical coal reserves near Patriot's Rock Lick preparation plant at Wharton, Boone County.

Patriot holds a 49 percent interest in the joint venture, which is named Rhino Eastern, while Rhino Energy owns 51 percent. Patriot said the joint venture has arranged to purchase two existing underground mines with more than 5 million tons of Eagle seam reserves. Patriot said the joint venture is expected to produce coal at a rate of more than 500,000 annual tons by the end of this year.
