Ten years on, Seinfeld stands up as great comedy that's widely
influential, writes Nicholas Turner.
Sex and the City and similar shows owe a big debt to Elaine
Benes. Ten years ago this month, one of the most popular and
critically acclaimed sitcoms came to a very poor end.
New Zealanders, typically, didn't get the Seinfeld finale until
November 1998, whereas North Americans saw the last hour-long
programme in May. No matter, it's time for a Seinfeld retrospective.
Consensus deigned the Seinfeld finale a disappointment. But today
we can see that one hiccup pales against the years of brilliance to
which it was compared.
Critical acclaim and commercial success for television are fairly
