Riotous applause greeted the safe landing early yesterday morning
of Nasa's trailblazing Phoenix Mars craft after its 10-month, 422-
million mile journey to the Red Planet.
Scientists from Bristol and Swindon, who are involved in the
pounds250 million project, were thrilled and relieved at its
successful touchdown on the planet's icy northern plains.
There were tense scenes at the University of Arizona's Science
Operations Centre, where West scientists were among the UK team, as
the craft the approached the descent.
But at 00:53 BST, the nail-biting was over and there were bear-
hugs and high-fives all round when Phoenix sent home its first
signals from the craggy Martian surface.
