Depending on whom you believe, track coach Trevor Graham is
either a liar whose untruths hindered a massive federal
investigation into performance-enhancing drug use in sports, or a
truth-telling whistle-blower now facing retaliation from athletes
whose drug use he helped expose when he sent a syringe full of
steroids to anti-doping officials five years ago.
Contrasting portraits of Graham emerged in opening statements
Monday in the second case to go to trial in connection with the six-
year-old federal investigation into performance-enhancing drugs
provided by the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (Balco), which also
has ensnared baseball slugger Barry Bonds.
