Article: Farrakhan discloses illness, gives up duties: Tells followers he's dehydrated, anemic

Citing illness, Minister Louis Farrakhan, the controversial and charismatic leader of the black Muslim group the Nation of Islam, said he is relinquishing day-to-day operations of his group.

Farrakhan, 73, who was operated on for prostate cancer in 2000, said that doctors in Cuba last March discovered "an ulcer in the anal area" and that he has lost 20 pounds in the past six weeks.

He is under undisclosed treatment guided by Howard University physicians, Farrakhan said in a letter dated Sept. 11 and posted Friday on the Web site of the group's newspaper, the Final Call.
