The United Church of Christ is only 51 years old, but its roots are hundreds of years old.

In 1957, the United Church of Christ was formed when the Evangelical and Reformed Church merged with the Congregational Christian Churches -- two denominations that were themselves the product of earlier mergers.

One of those mergers included the Congregational Churches, which were organized by pilgrims in Plymouth Plantation and the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1648.

The denomination's Web site describes the United Church of Christ as "one of the most diverse Christian churches in the United States," with "wide differences among many local congregations on a variety of issues."
