POMONA - An investigation by the state Department of Public
Health has found that a nurse at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical
Center accessed sedatives and narcotics from an automated system
without a doctor's order.
Through a series of interviews and a review of records, state
investigators found a 76-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital
March 6 due to a seizure disorder and died March 9 of apparent
respiratory failure.
It has not yet been determined if the woman's death was caused by
the improper administration of medication.
Hospital employees told state investigators that the patient
called for help one evening, and one employee notified the nurse.
