John McCain and Hillary Clinton know better, but it's an election
season and endorsing a vapid idea like a gas tax "holiday" for the
summer travel season just might be worth a few votes.
As politics, it makes sense. As an energy policy, it's senseless.
McCain, the Arizona Republican senator, first broached the idea
of suspending the 18.4-cent-per-gallon tax for the summer. Clinton,
the New York Democratic senator, soon joined the bandwagon, even
posing for holy pictures with a sheet-metal worker as he filled up
his pickup truck with her SUV idling nearby. Her rival for the
Democratic nomination, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, correctly
called the idea nothing more than a gimmick.
