New(ish) Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn should get a handle
on overtime in his department. He should do this because public
resources are finite and simply because good management practice
dictates that, where efficiencies can be found, they should be
enacted.
In doing so, however, the chief should be careful not to throw
out the baby with the bathwater.
A new Journal Sentinel Watchdog report this week by reporter Ben
Poston reveals that dozens of Milwaukee police detectives, sergeants
and undercover officers earned more than $100,000 in total pay last
year, much of it fueled by overtime.
That's good, useful information -- mined from city comptroller
