Washington -- The Milwaukee Brewers hoped they took steps Saturday night to improve both their thin starting pitching and inconsistent offense.

The first move was giving the ball to big right-hander Seth McClung, who moved out of the bullpen to pitch five solid innings in a 5-2 victory over the Washington Nationals.

The second move came after the game, when the Brewers called up veteran third baseman Russell Branyan from Class AAA Nashville. Manager Ned Yost said he planned to start Branyan today in place of Bill Hall, who has struggled badly against right-handed pitchers.
