The fundamental causes of bovine TB are the same as for TB in
humans - overcrowding and living in unhygienic conditions.
In the slums of Victorian and Edwardian Britain, families were
living seven or eight to a room and getting their water from a
communal pump or well. Cups and plates were shared and only washed
when absolutely necessary. Under these conditions TB was rife.
Today's practice of wintering cattle indoors in crowded
conditions, sharing drinking bowls that the animals operate by
depressing a lever with their muzzles in order to get a drink,
