West Mep Neil Parish, pictured, has called on the Government to
start supporting British farmers after it emerged the French
government is directly subsiding pig producers to the tune of
pounds12.4 million.
The French subsidies are paid through a special hardship fund.
They include a tax rebate worth pounds2.4 million and a loan
subsidy fund worth up to pounds10 million. The payments have come
to light after Conservative MEPs in the European Parliament wrote to
Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fisher Boel to ask whether the
French subsidies were legal under European law.
