SAN MATEO -- A power outage caused by water that seeped into
electrical equipment led to the evacuation of the College of San
Mateo around 9:30 a.m. Monday, said Jos Nunez, vice chancellor for
facilities with the San Mateo County Community College District.
The electrical malfunction led to the second campus-wide power
outage this semester, which ends Dec. 15. The first occurred Aug.
31, two weeks after the semester began.
While the age of the campus's electrical system -- which is more
than 40 years old -- was a factor in the failure, the immediate
cause was condensation that accumulated inside electrical equipment
at one of four "load centers" on campus, Nunez said. Electricity
