The number of post offices under the axe in Devon is above
average compared to other counties, a leading councillor has
claimed.
Brian Berman, executive lead member for communities on Devon
County Council, believes around six of the post offices earmarked
for closure should be saved - without the risk of other branches
closing elsewhere in the county.
Nationally, the Post Office has unveiled 2,000 branches which the
Government has ordered it to close, saying it is the only way to
keep the network viable. But many communities regard the facility as
a lifeline.
In Devon, excluding Plymouth and Torbay, 71 post offices could
close, out of 311.
