SONOMA -- He waved to the crowd as he took a slow victory lap on
a sun-splashed afternoon at Infineon Raceway. In the winner's
circle, he took a big swig of wine and hoisted the first-place
trophy before grabbing a bottle of champagne and spraying everyone
in sight.
Nobody's sure if Ben Spies' wire-to-wire victory in the Kawasaki
AMA Superbike Showdown on Sunday represented his last competitive
race on the 2.22-mile road course. If it was, the 23-year-old Texan
made sure to leave his mark.
Spies held off Suzuki teammate and rival Mat Mladin for the first
half of the 28-lap Superbike race then pulled away for 8.042-second
