Hold the phone. New Zealand's fledgling mobile marketing industry took a step forward this month with the launch of a new service pushing out targeted video ads for viewers to watch on their cellphones.

Since its launch in late 2006, mobile marketing company HooHaa has built up a database of more than 65,000 cellphone users willing to receive text ads, and - for their trouble - a payment of 10 cents per message they read.

Now HooHaa has taken the next logical step: Offering advertisers the chance to send video ads to their subscriber base. There are a few provisos on the service, however, which pretty much mirror the limitations currently hampering the wider NZ mobile marketing industry.
